General cargo ship sinks off Japan’s coast

Two seafarers have been reported dead and nine remain missing after the general cargo ship Jin Tian sank off the coast of Japan on January 25. 

The ship, which had a carrying capacity of 9,784 tonnes DWT, sank in the East China Sea, approximately 75 nautical miles south of Jeju Island, South Korea.

Thirteen of the crew members were rescued from the Hong Kong-flagged ship, which was en route from Vanimo, Papua New Guinea to Incheon, South Korea.

The vessel encountered rough weather while sailing over Asian waters, and five of the rescued crew members were Chinese, with no further information available on their condition. 

This tragic incident highlights the dangers that seafarers face in the course of their work and the importance of safety measures to protect their lives.
